چکیده

Aims. By reevaluating a 13-month stretch of Ulysses SWICS H pickup ion measurements near 5 AU close to the ecliptic right after the previous solar minimum, this paper presents a determination of the neutral interstellar H density at the solar wind termination shock and implications for the density and ionization degree of hydrogen in the LIC. Methods. The density of neutral interstellar hydrogen at the termination shock was determined from the local pickup ion production rate as obtained close to the cut-off in the distribution function at aphelion of Ulysses. As shown in an analytical treatment for the upwind axis and through kinetic modeling of the pickup ion production rate at the observer location, with variations in the ionization rate, radiation pressure, and the modeling of the particle behavior, this analysis turns out to be very robust against uncertainties in these parameters and the modeling. Results. Analysis using current heliospheric parameters yields the H density at the termination shock equal to 0.087 ± 0.022 cm, including observational and modeling uncertainties.

The Abundance of Atomic 1h, 4he and 3he in the Local Interstellar Cloud from Pickup Ion Observations with Swics on Ulysses

Pickup ions measured deep inside the heliosphere open a new way to determine the absolute atomic density of a number of elements and isotopes in the local interstellar cloud (LIC). We derive the atomic abundance of hydrogen and the two isotopes of helium from the velocity and spatial distributions of interstellar pickup protons and ionized helium measured with the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spe...

Slowdown of the Solar Wind in the Outer Heliosphere and the Interstellar Neutral Hydrogen Density

Voyager 2 and Ulysses were at nearly the same latitude in the southern heliosphere at the beginning of 1999 and their radial separation was about 55 AU. The e ect of pickup ions should be profound at Voyager's position, especially, the deceleration of the solar wind ow. This unique opportunity allows us to investigate the e ect of pickup ions based on direct multi-spacecraft observations. The U...

Interstellar and Inner Source Pickup Ions Observed with Swics on Ulysses

Many species of pickup ions, both of interstellar origin and from an inner, distributed source have been discovered using data from the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) on Ulysses. Velocity distribution functions of these ions were measured for the first time over heliocentric distances between 1.35 and 5.4 AU, both at high and low latitudes, and in the disturbed slow solar wind ...

Heating of Pickup and Solar Wind Ions at Jupiter's Bow Shock

Interstellar pickup ions are dynamically important in the outer heliosphere where they mass-load and heat the solar wind. Some of these pickup ions are transformed into energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) by charge exchange with the residual cold interstellar gas that is the primary constituent of the outer heliosphere. The most detailed measurements of interstellar pickup ions in the heliosphere ar...

The Production of Anomalous Cosmic Rays by the Solar Wind Termination Shock

We have modeled the injection and acceleration of pickup ions at the solar wind termination shock and investigated the parameters needed to produce the observed Anomalous Cosmic Ray (ACR) fluxes. A non-linear Monte Carlo technique was employed which in effect solves the Boltzmann equation and is not restricted to near isotropic particle distribution functions. This technique models the injectio...
